Small garden with a waterfall, fountains and flowers
A nearly flat 700 m² plot with a small house at the back. In a little space there is room for a waterfall with a pond, four fountains, two rose gardens and flowers in every corner, from the gate to the terrace.
Demonstration project. Fictional plot, house and owners. We designed it to show how much garden fits on a small plot, walked through at eye level.
The brief
The owners have a small, almost flat plot and want it to be lovely in every season: water you can hear, flowers everywhere and a corner to sit. Before planting they need to see how the waterfall, fountains, beds and paths fit without making the garden feel crowded.
What we built
- A nearly flat 20 × 35 m plot (700 m²) with a two-storey 9.6 × 6.6 m house by the north boundary.
- A 1.1 m waterfall with three steps over a small hill of granite stones, and a 24 m² pond 0.6 m deep.
- Four fountains: a round basin with water lilies on a circular square, a pedestal bowl in a round bed, a wall fountain with a trough at the end of the cross path and a millstone fountain in the east rose garden.
- 17 flower beds, 260 m²: two 36 m² rose gardens with obelisks and a sundial, mixed borders along the fences, flowers round the fountain and along the pond.
- 1,446 plants of 71 species: 10 flowering trees (magnolias, Japanese cherry, apple, plum, almond), 220 shrubs and climbers (wisteria over the terrace, climbing roses, clematis, jasmine) and 1,216 perennials and low shrubs (roses, lavender, sage, echinacea, hydrangeas, irises, agapanthus, peonies).
- A 45 m² timber terrace with a pergola, two rose arches, six flower urns on pedestals, eight lamps and three benches.
- About 36 m of paths, a laurel hedge of about 59 m and a terrain section through the waterfall.
What the owners gain
The owners see the garden in bloom before planting, check that water and flowers fit in 700 m² and choose species and colours with the project in front of them.
Technology
Our own 3D garden design software: waterfalls and fountains, flower beds and rose gardens, more than seventy species with their growth, sun by location and date, camera paths and video recorded by the software itself.
